Description: Current orthodoxy elevates passwordless authentication to an aspirational status. But “something you know” is still a convenient trick to authenticate a human, and when figuring out what really is human is on the other end of that Internet connection, can we afford to throw out any of the tools in our toolbox? However, if we could use passwords more effectively, we wouldn’t need to teach people a new authentication ritual. By combining passwords with other technologies, like fraud detection and behaviorial biometrics, we can make authentication more secure.
Enterprise workforce and consumer authentication services need to develop a more nuanced approach to credential management. To fight hackers, we need a holistic approach that considers not just how people authenticate, but how to properly enroll and recover accounts. And ultimately, we need to build authentication infrastructures that can adapt to the changing nature of security threats. Eliminating passwords is not a panacea. Viva passwords!
