Description: Developers and policymakers think about social and technological systems as a given in the present moment. However, they all have history and a deeper context. This presentation traces the history of two different types of identity systems: computers beginning with mainframes to the present, and the history of state-issued administrative identities in Europe. These two histories have resulted in very different system designs that are not necessarily comparable. The conclusion of the presentation makes the argument that Self-Sovereign Identity technologies provide a digital identity system that aligns with the historical norms of how state-issued administrative identities have worked.
