Session Abstract: Over the last few years, we've been treated to a series of bold proclamations about the ways in which "self-sovereign" identity will transform the identity world and revolutionize the way that people manage, assert, and control their data. Yet lurking just beneath the surface have been four major problems with SSI — which, if unaddressed — will make it very hard for these solutions to get any meaningful traction in the marketplace. They may even undermine many of the goals SSI advocates want to achieve. Much like the Four Horsemen who were harbingers of the Biblical apocalypse, these four problems are indicators of the doom that SSI initiatives face if the community cannot come up with practical solutions to address them. This session will reveal the Four Horsemen (preview: they are not death, famine, war, and conquest), and also talk about promising developments in the space that may yet provide a way forward.
