Session Abstract: Digital Identity comprises the complex orchestration of multiple technologies, standards, and protocols to enable entities to access the services, benefits, and data to which they are entitled. Digital identity also allows organizations to mitigate risks associated with fraud and unauthorized access. It sits at the nexus of cybersecurity and customer experience—making it essential to trusted, modern digital services.
Balancing these competing realities has been brought into sharp relief in the past few years – from billions of dollars in fraud to victims left without financial assistance. Research, measurement science, and standards offer a pathway to responsible innovation and a more secure, accessible digital environment.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a long history of providing foundational components to the identity ecosystem. In this session, NIST’s experts will discuss a strategic roadmap for digital identity—one that advances innovation through public/private engagement, research, guidance, and enhanced measurement of digital identity solutions. From mobile driving licenses to verifiable credentials and equity considerations, we'll cover upcoming priorities and initiatives that provide government and industry a foundation to build digital services that enhance equitable access, user choice, privacy, interoperability, and security.
