At Identiverse 2023, we talked about the need for standards to secure workload identities as part of Alex Simons' keynote on "Open Standards for the Intelligent Trust Fabric." The keynote set in motion a chain of vents that has resulted not only in several new draft standards to enable zero-trust workload identity architectures, but also contributed to the creation of a new IETF working group, Workload Identity for Multi-Service Environments (WIMSE), dedicated to developing key standards for securing workload identities. In this session, we will take stock of the progress and benefits of new drafts like Transaction Tokens and Identity Chaining Across Trust Boundaries, while identifying the remaining gaps and exploring the next round of standards needed to deploy zero-trust architectures for workload identities and how the efforts in the Cloud Native Compute Foundations, the IETF, and the OpenID Foundation are converging to create the trust fabric we need for workload identities.
