Passkeys aim to improve both usability and security compared to traditional passwords. However, the crucial feature of cross-device synchronization introduces potential challenges, as the security of a passkey is intrinsically tied to the security of its synchronization mechanism. This can lead to scenarios where passkeys may effectively offer only single-factor authentication. This session explores various approaches to address this challenge and introduces the concept of "trust signals" for passkeys. Trust signals provide relying parties with increased assurance by offering additional contextual information about the authentication process, enhancing the overall security and reliability of passkey systems.
