With the rise in digital identity — mobile driver's license, e-identity, digital identity wallets and more — we’ve seen a concurrent rise in the availability and uptake of online identity verification solutions. Whilst on the one hand this promises to simplify and streamline what can be an onerous process, there are significant risks. If identity proofing is over-adopted, or executed poorly, we open up organizations and individuals alike to significant harms, and we risk permanently compromising our ability to perform safe and trustworthy online identity verification. This panel will discuss the rationales for [and against!] adopting digital identity proofing, the shape of the current technical and policy landscape, the potential pitfalls, and actionable approaches to help ensure that proofing is done at the right time, the right way and for the right reasons.
