As countries around the world advance new digital identity solutions like mDLs and digital wallets, governments are playing a critical role. The US has diverged from this path, however: while states and agencies like the TSA and NIST are helping to drive progress on mDLs, there is no overarching US government strategy to define what “good” looks like in digital identity and how to get there [or what “bad” might look like and how to avoid it]. Against this backdrop – is there a way for the private sector to help advance a responsible governance structure in the US for the use of emerging digital credentials like mDLs? This session will explore the current state of digital identity policy and explore a potential new model for a self-regulatory initiative to drive positive outcomes as America’s digital identity ecosystem emerges.
