Once upon a time, there was an old yet trusted identity provider that had delivered many valuable services over the years.
However, in recent times, it had become obsolete, a frequent source of incidents, and a significant barrier to innovation. As these incidents became more and more frequent and began to have ever greater business impact, a project was launched to modernize this poor component.
Like any well-structured project, it started with a scoping phase, initially planned to last two months. However, those two months stretched into three, then four, then five… As the team dug deeper into the subject, they uncovered ever more dependencies with other IS components, as well as with various IT processes and business operations.
What began as a straightforward $200k obsolescence project soon evolved into a full-scale $26M program. The program even had many baby projects, and they lived happily ever after… or maybe not
