Verifiable credentials (VCs) can be a game changer for the citizen experience. Replacing physical cards in your wallet with digital, interoperable ones proves to be a compelling value prop. In this session, we share our experience deploying at a country-level deployment of approximately 83,000 citizens. Use cases included bank account VCs, educational transcript VCs, and Vehicle Registration VCs. We explore key questions and deployment challenges deploying VCs at scale.

Some key questions we look to answer:

  • How do you drive interoperability and portability of the VC across various agencies (e.g., banking, education, and government)?
  • How do you drive adoption and buy in from top leadership and users?
  • What was the technical architecture used?
    • Reference architecture co-existing current IdP / AuthN technology
    • Wallet app for both iOS & Android for end-users to hold & share VCs.
    • Web Portals to design, issue, verify manage VCs and operate the ecosystem.
    • What were the business processes used for:
    • Onboarding users and organizations into the platform?
    • Creating, issuing and verifying VCs?
  • What were some of the deployment challenges?
    • Enrollment
    • Recovery
    • Post deployment and customer support
    • Handling exceptions
  • How do we take what we learned here and drive confidence with IAM and business leaders to adopt VCs?
