"Darpa" Dan Kaufman is a renowned privacy and cybersecurity innovator, best known for his pivotal role in establishing DARPA’s Information Innovation Office (I2O). For over nearly two decades, Mr. Kaufman championed stronger Internet security measures and procured cutting-edge technologies to maintain U.S. military superiority.
At DARPA, Mr. Kaufman oversaw programs in AI, cybersecurity, and big data analysis. Under his leadership, the office developed AI tools for counterterrorism and the first dark web crawler. His contributions earned him the Secretary of Defense’s highest civilian award, the Medal for Distinguished Public Service.
At Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, Mr. Kaufman led initiatives to merge AI advancements with hardware innovations. He also co-created Dreamworks Interactive with Bruce Jacobsen, merging Steven Spielberg's creativity with Microsoft's technical prowess to develop the console strategy and early prototypes for Xbox.
