Privacy has all but disappeared -- not through breaches, but countless design choices. Our phones, networks, browsers, digital wallets, mobile driver's licenses, and credentials all promise access, security, and convenience. They also leave traces that make our lives correlatable and controllable.
Functional anonymity is dying, but anonymity alone is not the solution. We must identify ourselves to access services, prevent fraud, and participate in society. Many of our rights depend upon identification - rights which paradoxically include the right to privacy.
This talk explores the challenges, tensions, and trade-offs that constrain privacy. It asks what technologies and standards can help us chart a path toward digital agency.
