While a fully-automated, remote identity proofing process may be the ideal for enrolling users into an online service, the fact is many people aren’t able to complete a self-service identity proofing process without the assistance of a real-life human being. Recognizing this reality, revision 4 of NIST’s Special Publication 800-63A, Digital Identity Guidelines: Identity Proofing and Enrollment, defines and clarifies four roles individuals can play in supporting an applicant through the identity proofing process: proofing agent, trusted referee, applicant reference, and process assistant.
In addition to clarifying the purpose, responsibilities, and risks associated with these roles, this presentation will provide examples of possible applicant user journeys that incorporate interaction with one or more of the identity proofing roles defined in NIST SP 800-63A-4.
