Digital identity has always been chaotic. However, just as IAM and cybersecurity teams began gaining traction in managing human and non-human identities, the rapid rise of AI has increased the chaos – making prior identity efforts incomplete.

AI agents are already spreading across the enterprise, often without approval, visibility, or control. This is the reality of shadow AI, and it’s introducing a fast-growing set of security risks and compliance gaps. Ignoring it won’t slow it down — it will only make the problem harder to contain. 

To respond, organizations need to fundamentally rethink governance. AI agents must be treated as digital workers, with defined identities, trust relationships, and privileges, not as tools operating outside existing controls.
